County Sligo is one of the thirty-two traditional counties of the island of Ireland, located in the province of Connacht. It was named after the town of Sligo which is the anglisation of Sligeach meaning Place of the Shells. The population of the county is 60,894 according to the 2006 census. Sligo is the 22nd largest of Ireland's 32 counties in area and 26th largest in terms of population. It is the fourth largest of Connacht's 5 counties in size and third largest in terms of population.
